AI Safety Needs Social Scientists

Abstract

Distill articles are interactive publications and do not include traditional abstracts. This summary was written for the ML Anthology. Argues that developing safe AI systems requires empirical expertise from social scientists, particularly for studying how people make judgments about complex, value-laden questions that AI systems may encounter.
