Design Integrated Learning Systems for Engineering Design

Abstract

The acquisition of design knowledge is a complex task. This paper prescribes a methodology that assists in the identification of machine learning techniques that partially automate design knowledge acquisition. The use of this method is illustrated in the design of two learning systems: BRIDGER and Boss. The conclusions elaborate on the general issues involved in the use of learning in engineering design triggered by these two programs.
