Directional Hearing by the Mauthner System
Abstract
We provide a computational description of the function of the Mau(cid:173) thner system. This is the brainstem circuit which initiates fast(cid:173) start escapes in teleost fish in response to sounds. Our simula(cid:173) tions, using back propagation in a realistically constrained feedfor(cid:173) ward network, have generated hypotheses which are directly inter(cid:173) pretable in terms of the activity of the auditory nerve fibers, the principle cells of the system and their associated inhibitory neu(cid:173) rons.
